Gotcha!

My lovely Texan friend Belinda has posted about her photos being pinched and appearing on Pinterest.

I admit to "pinching" photos from some blogs, but I know that the people involved won't mind. However, pinning photos from blogs without the owner's permission is surely an infringement of copyright?

Anyway, someone left a comment on Belinda's blog about how to stop your photos and tutorials being "Pinched to Pinterest".

Click on this link and follow the instructions. No more "Pinching to Pinterest"!

More soon.

Legally, our photos become the right to reproduce by whomever stores them for us online...that's how we get google image searches etc. I did an entire article on blogging copyright issues years ago (link in my sidebar)as it is a super hot topic.

But it is unethical for this reason. One blog I read posted...with explicit permission..a famous quilters latest works that had super inspired her. Those photos were pinned and repinned multiple times and either no credit was ever given for this famous, work really copyrighted quilter, OR the credit was given to the blogger, herself, which super embarrassed her because it then made it look like she was taking credit for the work.

People are leaving Pinterest in droves over this issue. Pinterest is now saying always ask permission. Hmm..sound like they are facing legal issues from this to me....

Did you see the No Pinterest button in the sidebar of my blog? And the updated "copyright" statement? There's information linked from the button that is worth reading.

I've added the metadata to my blog's html -- but I don't pin so I don't know if it really works.

Definitely hot issues these days - and rightfully so!

I am soooo glad I am your 'lovely' friend from Texas! I could have been your 'snorky' friend, or a friend of a friend.....or perhaps a 'short' friend or your 'fat' friend and yes, even your 'old' friend....HA!!!

I'm off to read Michele's article!!

i enjoy pinning, but its usually recipes or hairstyles with instructions, and most all of those sites have a "pin this" button....so they intend on sharing these things.
i have my blog blocked, but thats because most of my stuff is personal, and i doubt anyone would want to pin it in the first place :) thanks for sharing this!

I don't see Pinterest as an infringement, I see it as free publicity! What they do is link to your blog, and the picture is the enticement to go there. They are not "stealing" your picture, they are saying -- I like this, go take a look. I've discovered some great blogs and sites that way.

Boy, what a hot topic! I completely agree with jovaliquilts, so I won't rehash that. I wrote a bunch of stuff after this, but erased it. Seems like a lot of knickers in a wad over nothing to me! ;-D

yup, I'm with the free publicity folks. In fact, my blog specifically says everything is copy right free. I don't make a living from my art projects- I make my life from them. Seeing that someone liked them enough to pin them, copy them, etc tickles me pink!
